WoW Guide - Rotface Strategy and Tactics

UPDATED 18/02/2010

Rotface is a fairly easy fight in terms of strategy and tactics, the mechanics centralise around the boss applying a debuff on a player that lasts for 12 seconds called Mutating Infection, once it is cleansed or expires it will spawn a small ooze add that should be picked up by the offtank. These small oozes will merge to form a big ooze until it cant get any bigger and then explodes doing damage to the offtank and anyone in range. At various stages in the fight parts of the room will be inaccessible due to Ooze Floods and the boss will need to be kited. He also does a frontal cone AoE and will need to be faced away from raid AT ALL TIMES.

Tactics - Rotface Strategy - Abilities
  • Ooze Flood - Inflicts 4,388 to 4,612 (25-player: 5,363 to 5,637) damage every 1 second and reduces movement speed by 25%. Affects all targets in the flood. Lasts for 20 seconds.
  • Slime Spray - Inflicts 5,363 to 5,637 Nature damage to players in front of Rotface every 1 second for 5 seconds.
  • Mutated Infection - 3,413 to 3,587 (25-player: 3,900 to 4,100 ) damage every 1 second for 12 seconds, and reduces healing received by 50%. After the Infection is removed a Small Ooze spawns at the target's location.

Small Ooze

  • Sticky Ooze - Sprays a puddle of green goo near a target, inflicting 2,925 to 3,075 (25-player: 3,900 to 4,100) Nature damage every 1 second and decreasing movement speed by 50% for all targets within the 6 yards radius of the puddle.
  • Weak Radiating Ooze - Inflicts 3,413 to 3,587 Nature damage every 2 seconds to players within 10 yards. Causes the Small Ooze to merge with other nearby Small Oozes. When two Small Oozes merge, they form a Big Ooze.

Big Ooze

  • Sticky Ooze - Sprays a puddle of green goo near a target, inflicting 2,925 to 3,075 (25-player: 3,900 to 4,100) Nature damage every 1 second and decreasing movement speed by 50% for all targets within the 6 yards radius of the puddle.
  • Radiating Ooze - Inflicts 4,388 to 4,612 damage every 2 seconds to players within 10 yards. Causes the Big Ooze to merge with other nearby Big Ooze. When a Big Ooze merges with another one, it gains a stack of Unstable Ooze
  • Unstable Ooze - Increases all damage done by 20% per application. Applied when two Big Oozes merge.
  • Unstable Ooze Explosion - Inflicts 9,750 to 10,250 (25-player: 11,700 to 12,300) Nature damage to players within 6 yards. Cast when a Big Ooze reaches 5 stacks of Unstable Ooze.

Tactics: Rotface Strategy: Raid Assignments

Main Tank: Rotface
Off Tank: Ooze Kiting
Ranged DPS: Rotface
Melee DPS: Rotface but be very careful on positioning.
Healers: 1 on Main Tank and 1 on Raid/Offtank if you have 3 healers then an extra on raid/OT is handy.

Raid Leader Remember: Make sure your team do not get infront of the boss when DPSing, ensure that the Large Oozes are tanked far enough away from the raid and the person dropping the little oozes is close enough to the offtank for them to be picked up. The Offtank will take large amounts of damage when the large Oozes merge so again I cant stress this enough lots of healing, if its a problem your going to have to get your DPS to take out some ooze but thats going down the achievement route.

Tactics - Rotface Strategy: Execution.

The room itself does Ooze Flood, which floods basically an entire quadrant of the room with slime.   Random order, but each one must occur at least once before re-randomizing (think Twin Valks abiltiies).  Use this knowledge to avoid the slimes when possible.   Also the precursor to the flood is pipes leaking out slime.    With most of the raid in the center and close, they should not have to to deal with this much, the center pattern area is safe.

Slime Spray is a random target directional cone cast. It's a slow cast to watch for. The raid merely has to scatter from the direction he's facing before the cast completes. For less chaos, you may want to set up 2 clump groups behind Rotface. Like one on the left, one on the right. That gives him only 2 possible directions to look at, so left group move when he looks at you, right group moves when he looks at you. Move back after the spray.

Mutated Infection is a Grobbulus type debuff, well a DoT and MS effect, but if cleansed or let it run its duration, it'll spawn a Small Ooze.   Those have to be dealt with in a specific manner which I'll explain below. Just means don't insta-cleanse this until called for, if it's even neccessary. Anyways, one further note on this is that it will occur faster as the fight goes on.  The speculative theory atm is that it's time based.  Longer the fight, the shorter duration, going down to even 15 seconds per Infection (12 sec debuff).   This would mean, Heroism and CDs should be popped early, kill fast as possible.

Small Ooze spawns when a Mutated Infection runs its course or is cleansed. They will fixate (500K threat lead) on the person that was Infected.   They are not tauntable but they are snarable. They have a damage aura so the Infected has to leave the raid to kite him out. They also spit out slime puddles to avoid. When 2 or more of them get close, they merge into a Big Ooze. The goal of the Infected is to get them to merge asap.

Big Oozes are formed when 2 or more Small Oozes (or other Big Oozes) merge.  These guys are tauntable and can be tanked, but no longer snarable. They also do the damage aura, and also gain 20% more damage (stacking buff) with each ooze they merge with.    You want to kite these, they will kill you.  Now, you can either have an OT kite these around, keep threat, kite around the room around the slime puddles.

The Infected are to bring their small oozes to the kiter so they can merge them into the big ooze. When the big ooze gets to 5 stacks of small ooze, it will stop and being to cast Big Ooze Explosion. This is a multiple "Shadow Crash" thing. It launches ooze rockets up in the air and explodes wherever you were standing when launched. So if the entire raid is in the center, that's where all the ooze would be hitting. Watch for the animation of the rockets to be launched, then gtfo from the center until they all exploded.

Here is a video foryou to check out.

There is honestly not much more to say about this at the moment, this will be updated with a confirmed kill strategy sometime this week.

Good luck with the fight.
