The Over Inflated Ego of Gearscore

If anyone reading this thinks that gear score has any bearing on the actual performance of a player in a raid environment then you should definitely wake up. This whole schoolboy business of my GS is higher than your GS is total crap. I’ve seen players with a much lower GS out DPS, out Tank and certainly out Heal players who’s ego’s are over inflated due to their GS approaching some fictional benchmark of awesomeness. Does a high GS mean a good player? No it doesn’t. It doesn’t stop nubcakes from standing in fires, not moving out of the AoE and it certainly doesn’t stop people from being unreliable, obnoxious and show a total lack of social aptitude for team play. What it has served to do so far is to provide the people who think they know everything a way of trying to say with absolute certainty that they are better than anyone else due to a few hundred poxy gearscore.

Do yourself a favour and don’t get caught up in all this number crunching. Be realistic about what the data of a gearscore can tell you and at least understand how you should use that information and how you should not.

My current main is a Resto Druid, my offspec is Moonkin, I’ve run VoA that many times that I have the 25 man Feral legs and hands. I have been unlucky with the 25 man T10 Resto Gloves, they just wont drop for me. Point of fact: Gearscore cannot be trusted without an inspection. All I need to do is to wear the highest iLevel pieces of kit I own, regardless of itemisation and type (PvP in my PvE anyone?) and there we go, suddenly some idiot has decided I’m now good enough to join the so called elite ranks of their raid.

Gearscore is only able to tell you that they have decent iLevel pieces of kit, it cannot tell you they know how to gem, enchant or itemize their gear correctly, or even if they are using any tier pieces or if a plate wearer is wearing mail. The list is endless. It definitely cannot tell you that person has any skill.

Now I’m not saying it isn’t a good place to start, you wouldn’t take someone with a 2500gs into ICC 25, but be cautious and make sure you don’t become dependant on GS to choose your raiding companions, you might fall foul of the GS > Common sense theme that seems to be happening.

Number 1 rule, be careful your not being Gear Scorest!

Raid Leader Addons: Raid Buff Status

Over the next few weeks I will be detailing what addons I recommend for Raid Leaders. I've tried and tested loads and am constantly looking for new releases and updates. A great place to read up on addons in general is http://www.nostockui.com a place that I recommend to any WoW player of any class.

Raid Buff Status is one of the addons that I consider to be one of my "Core" simply because it's ease of use, setup and the amount of buffs that people "forget" or seem to miss for whatever reason.

Raid Buff Status works right out of the box extremely well, but if you want to maximise it's potential and really integrate it into your raiding practice then there are a few options you will want to configure. Those such as where to announce warnings and what "extra" announcements to make. These...

RL Rants: I dont want to help

Raid Leader Rant: But I don’t want to get saved to help!

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I posted my last RLR, why? Well mainly because folks have been pretty good up till xmas, then xmas, and now the raids have gathered momentum a bit more and low and behold, the grumpy ole Cybac is back in town. So what’s the grumpy RL moaning about this time? People who complain or refuse to get saved to an already started GUILD raid. Now let me get the details clear, I’m not asking people to join a pug and get saved, it’s a GUILD run, I’m not asking because I want to, I’m asking because I need the help, because the team and ultimately the GUILD needs the help. Why am I putting GUILD in capitals all the time? Simply to make the point that the needs of the many (GUILD!) outweigh the needs of the one. If killing one more progression boss puts us 4-5 spots higher on our servers faction ranks then I really do expect people to make ALL...

Raid Leader: RL Preparation and Analysis

Hey fellow WoWers,

I just wanted to touch on a couple of points that have sparked a little bit of interest for me. I've recently been pugging a few raids to places that I quite like and hold some interest for me, even though they dont hold any upgrades. Getting a few more kills under my belt but using it as light relief from the role of RL by just sitting back and being a player again.

What I noticed is that there are some really good RL's out there, and then there are some really attrocious ones. I've tried really hard to step back and not say anything and let the raid run it's course, watching, learning and generally forming my own opinions of what the problems are. I have to say it's easier said than done, my initiall reaction is to jump into the fray and start trying to organise things, kind of a RL OCD that wont go away without medication. ;)

For every 2-3 bad...

Guild Structure and Leadership

Guild Structure and Leadership

I've been thinking about this article now for over a week and a bit, since one of the readers here asked what my opinion was on their guildies putting pressure on their officers to boost and raid older content (/wave Piefixer). I was pretty blunt with my response, mainly because I've seen a lot of lazy guildies over the last few years. People who just want a free lunch and to have everything organised for them and handed to them on a plate. Dont get me wrong I've also met my fair share of the good guys and the folks who can be bothered to go that extra mile to help out, but more common these days are people who fit into the first observation.

It led to an overall question of what I think the officers should be doing, what is their role and how far should they be putting themselves out to try and accomodate the requests of other guild members. What's the role of the GM in all of this and what can guildies...
