Focus Magic: Cataclysmic Mage Glyphs

Focus Magic: Blink and you’ll miss it.
Welcome to this week’s edition of Focus Magic; your local WoW Mage blog! Before we begin, I have a confession to make. Being a slight airhead, and ditsy, I *accidently* un-installed World of Warcraft from my machine (On Thursday) and have only just finished downloading all the patches. I won’t go into detail about how I deleted it, but one tip – ALWAYS CHECK WHAT’S IN A FOLDER BEFORE YOU DELETE IT.
So, being away from WoW for such a monstrous period of time, I didn’t have a lot of playing over the weekend, although I did take quite a shine to a DotA-based game called League of Legends. But as I didn’t play WoW that much, I didn’t have much inspiration for this week’s Focus Magic article. I looked over what we’ve currently discussed, and I thought maybe a levelling guide would be a good way to go, but then again, a levelling guide this close to Cataclysm would be quite obsolete. Then again, people may be striving to see the aspects of a Mage before Cata hits, so it might be an idea for future articles.
Since we’ve been recently brushed over the highly speculated Cataclysm expansion, it occurred to me that we are yet to overview Glyphs. And that’s just what this edition of Focus Magic is all about! The current Mage cataclysm glyphs!
Firstly, I’ll start with the Glyph System. Like most things in Cataclysm, the Glyph system is getting a revamp. I don’t know much about this yet, and as you already know I’m trying to keep as much of the behind the scenes work of Cataclysm a secret. But I know that the current system as we know it is gone. There will be (to my knowledge) 3 Minor, Major and Prime Glyphs which will all benefit your character in some way, like the current glyphs. However, I have heard numerous rumours that once you have a glyph, that will be stored in your glyph system, ready for use at any time you wish, negating the need to go and reglyph every time you re-spec. This isn’t to say go and stock up on all the available glyphs right now, as the level 85 glyphs will surely have an upper hand over the current level 80 glyphs, but it is worth noting, because the glyphs may scale, rather than be overwritten. So if you see any glyphs lying around on the Auction House for a few gold, stock up! At most you will only lose about 200g from this if these glyphs become useless, but you’ll make that back in no time. Especially if you follow the tips and guides from Cybac’s wondrous gold making articles!
There has been a massive change to Mage Glyphs, whether they’re being converted to a different tier of glyph, redesigned or removed altogether. Here is the information I’ve been able to find on the glyphs so far for Mages.|
Prime |
Major |
Minor |
|
Arcane Blast Arcane Missiles Fireball Molten Armor Arcane Barrage Cone of Cold Deep Freeze Frostbolt Ice Lance Pyroblast Frostfire Bolt |
Arcane Power Blast Wave Blink Dragon’s Breath Evocation Frost Nova Ice Barrier Icy Veins Ice Block Invisibility Mana Shield Polymorph Slow |
Mirror Image Slow Fall Monkey Penguin Arcane Intellect Conjuring Armors |
Below I’ve managed to get a hold of as much glyph information as I can, and I aware that some have been left out, but I’m working on this! From what I can see, the new glyphs look very promising, have a look and analyse for yourself!
Glyph of Arcane Barrage: Increases the critical strike chance of your Arcane Barrage spell by 5%.
Glyph of Arcane Missiles: Increases the damage of your Arcane Missiles spell by 5%.
Glyph of Arcane Power: Removes the 20% mana cost penalty of your Arcane Power effect.
Glyph of Cone of Cold: Increases the damage of your Cone of Cold spell by 25%.

Glyph of Dragon's Breath: Reduces the cooldown of your Dragon's Breath by 3 sec.

Glyph of Frostbolt: Increases the critical strike chance of your Frostbolt spell by 5%.
Glyph of Frostfire: Your Frostfire Bolt now deals 10% additional damage over 9 sec, but no longer reduces the victim's movement speed.

Glyph of Invisibility: Increases your movement speed while Invisible by 40%.
Glyph of Mana Shield: Reduces the cooldown of your Mana Shield by 2 sec.

Glyph of Mirror Image (Minor): Your Mirror Images cast Arcane Blast or Fireball instead of Frostbolt depending on your primary talent tree.

I suppose that brings this week’s edition of Focus Magic to an end. I apologise for the briefness of this issue, but with limited access to WoW and almost no access to the Cataclysm Beta, it has been a struggle to put anything together at all, but I hope this will bring help to someone, somewhere! My WoW issue is now sorted, so I will decide on either a levelling guide as Cataclysm nears or maybe a time-filler guide, including fun and challenging things to do on your Mage before the pre-expansion bores hit your screen. Until next Monday, have a pleasant week, and remember…
