The Reckoning: Way out in Left Field
WoW Blogs - The Reckoning Paladin Blog
FOTM Paladins. I don’t even need to come up with a punchline here. Just FOTM Paladins. See picture.
There are people who legitimately create paladins for the first time nowadays, and to those I give kudos. But there are a particular group of clowns that have no love in my cold, shriveled, and black heart. They just waltzed into the class in various points of Wrath of the Lich King and demanded to be catered to. Trying to reverse everything the Paladin class has worked for since release because they want to play godmode machines and frankly, it’s ruining it for the rest of us. You’ve seen them before, they’re the ones staging full blown demonstrations whenever our numbers get toned down, while us Paladins have been here since launch do what we always do. A glass of warm scotch. Sure we remember the old days when warriors were considered the only plate class deserving of Non-int weapons and STR/Tank Plate. Hell, I remember the time I lost The Destroyer of Worlds to a hunter. Those were a time to protest. Nowadays though, we’ve become infinitely better than anything we could hope for, and we’re only getting better in Cataclysm.
As I come to find out, there is a significant movement to stop some of the Cataclysm changes from going live, because it interferes with their broken mentality.
Stop.
Seriously, we’re not fine with the status quo right now because Ret in arena plays out more like being a Holy Paladin with a 2H. Protret, the alternative, has you playing Protection in Retribution gear. Again, a swing and miss. Would it really be so horrible to want to play as a Retribution Paladin in arenas, as a Retribution paladin? Geesh, I’ve never wanted to state the obvious more than watching a woman who’s has more plastic in her face than a lego try to sell skin cream. I’ve touched up on this before, but it just keeps coming up
I’ll go off on points I’ve received from FOTM Paladins over Wrath about how the Paladin class should be and provide a counter point. Maybe then I’d stop getting tells about it.
1.) A Paladin is a defensive class.
I’ve been getting this since literally the beginning of WoW. Paladins spent most of the beta as “destroyers of fail,” a very far cry from the way they were released. Somehow Blizzard thought that the seal and judgement system, that isn’t really around today, was similar to the Crusader/Holy Strike system but did less damage. I don’t know. We went from being fun to the AFKadin in two weeks. Instead of nerfing numbers (Which they should of done) they half assed it and turned Crusader Strike into a bastard shaman weapon buff, and judgement(sic, that’s right. They didn’t even bother to spell check it, let alone balance it.) to unleash it, kind of like how Holy Strike worked. That’s when the entire Paladin class collectively became alcoholics. Some of us went holy to hide our shame like but those of us who didn’t feel like healing(Myself included) grouped up like a Paladin orphanage, only to sit around hoping to be adopted, while our matron (Kalgan) beat us like a rented mule and took a nice steamy piss on our faces. This caused a little resentment in the Retribution community to the flower child that had no trouble being adopted.(Holy) That’s right, a golden shower AND yet another orphan joke. (Remember, contact page!)
2.) If they didn’t want us to play defensively in PvP, they wouldn’t of balanced us that way. There’s something I really want to note here. Cataclysm is the first time we’ve really received a paradigm-shifting class overhaul. It was promised to us 3 times already, and the only thing that changed was them adding a new attack, adding a utility talent, and not doing anything else. Literally, the only thing we got in BC was Crusader strike, and like Oppenheimer, they regretted that the MOMENT it happened. It put our instant attacks up to two, and Retribution, who had been just stacking and stacking offensive stats, just leveled everything in our path. Crusader strike was balanced around resilience. But at 60, No resilience was in the game at all, so we were one-offing people like a paddle with nails on it to their proverbial asses. It’s been like that for the years leading up to cataclysm. They’d add something they balanced (Or lack thereof, har har) to later content, add it in early, then nerf it, because they weren’t bright enough to balance it around us having to stack offensive stats to be competitive in earlier content. They never fix it, so we’re forced to repeat history by stacking pure offensive stats until the next expansion, where the mistake repeats again and again. (Cluster!#@* anyone?) By offensive stats, I mean strength. Other classes have the liberty and need to stack other things like Armor pen, hit, crit, haste, and expertise. Us? If it doesn’t come as the second stat on an item, chances are we aren’t going to get it, because we need a crap ton of strength to not suck. We don’t have any offensive utility sans a stun and a disorient that breaks on damage. Burst, burst, burst. Fighting a healer can be defined like what the town whore said to the man with a Porsche. “Give up, you’re not doing anything for me.”
3.) If they didn’t want us to make healing a focus, they wouldn’t of given them to us!Here’s one I get a lot. Without Cataclysm’s new talent system, how in the hell would they expect a Paladin to solo –anything- without healing? We don’t get a real instant strike until level 50, and combat is a lesson in boredom. I suppose judgement would count nowadays but back when I leveled, most Paladins hardly had it on their bars because It hit like a BB gun shooting a goddamn M1A1 Abrams tank. It stacked only with spellpower, and if we stacked just spellpower, or a hybrid of spellpower and STR, chances are, you’re just going to be mediocre at everything. So, a majority of our combat up until 50 is alt-tabbing and looking at porn. Coming back to heal up when it’s over. I will say, that healing isn’t going away in Cataclysm for Prot or Ret, but the there is no chance it’s going to be our main focus. We have two healing focus talents. One to make our heal have a chance to cost no holy power, and one to make it hit harder when cast on others. It’s going to be our only real heal because the way they’re reforming our mana intake. Other heals are just going to be too damn expensive. Sure, you can buy that plasma TV while working at McDonalds, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to eat for the next couple of weeks.
